Horse/Vehicle Crashes

Abandoned horses have been documented
from coast-to-coast. They are left in corrals and pastures, tied to
unattended horse trailers at trail heads, loaded into unattended
trailers at sales, left behind at sporting events, turned out into state
and national forests and parks, dumped on Indian reservations, and let
loose on county, state and interstate roadways.
Hungry horses, following their natural instinct to forage for food, will
test the strength of an enclosure. If they find a weak link, they will
escape looking for grass. Escaping a pen to eat may put them in harms
way of motor vehicle traffic, resulting in often-fatal collisions--for
both the horse and the driver.
