4/20/11 Oregon:  Pair face 100 counts of animal neglect

AMH ID Number:  OR6
March 2011

This is Sharon, she arrived here a month ago. Her owners said the horse was not their responsibility because she belonged to their son. He was away in college and had been
gone for a couple of years. No one wanted her, so they let her stand in freezing temps
all winter and let her starve. She was in with a stallion and according to the neighbors,
she foaled out two times and both times the baby lasted a short time and died.
No mother can feed a baby in this condition.

Mare is doing really well now, her weight is coming back and she is a sweet horse who will make someone a grand saddle horse hopefully.

Dropped off here, owner no longer wanted her due to heart murmur.
She is now in the hands of a lovely 10-year-old girl on a ranch nearby and her life is good.

This was pure luck finding this girl, 20-year-olds with heart murmurs are not easy to place.

2/25/11 Oregon:  Neglected horses, dogs seized near Silverton

AMH ID Number:  OR5
November 2010
Lot: Group of 42

All of these horses, and others, were taken from one individual's property. One was
euthanized immediately after being seen by veterinarian; a second was euthanized later.

The vet attending these horses gave the rescue a break and only charged them $300 to
euthanize the pair. Through Nov. 30, vet bills on these horses amounted to $1337.

More photos posted online.

Black mare, unable to walk, was carried into the trailer and taken directly to the vet.
The contents of the foot spurted out onto the floor opening the sole. Infection in there
so long it ate up the internal workings. She was euthanized immediately.

Grey mare with eye infection. The untreated eye blew up and we had to have it removed.

Bay mare with hole in sole from abscess and super starved.

2-year-old palomino. Wire cut, infected and open so you can see into the joint.
Thought it might be a possible euthanasia when we got her, but all clean and pretty now.
UPDATE 12/13:
Cut has healed nicely and the palomino is able to get out in the
pasture for some exercise with the puncture-wound paint (below).

2-year-old paint, puncture in left rear. Recovering..

26-year-old appy mare, mostly blind, super scared. Baby by her side and bred back.

26-year-old mare with puncture-chest wound (shown inset), infected.
Emaciated beyond belief, has foal by her side and bred back.

Thoroughbred mare, 25 years old, had baby by her side and is bred back.
Emaciated beyond measure but still nursing her baby.

Buckskin mare, a starvation case

Little red mare was down and unable to get to water or food.

Stallion had an infected penis that was so advanced there was no choice but to amputate.
Since he also suffered from ringbone (painful, degenerative osteoarthritis),
the decision was made to euthanize him.

5/9/10 Oregon:  Six horses rescued from overwhelmed rescuer

AMH ID Number:  OR4
May 7, 2010
Lot: Group of 6

Our group took six horses out of a total of 19 rescued by a lady who later discovered
she couldn't afford their upkeep. The two deputies who were involved were awesome.
They video taped and took lots of pictures and said they would stay with it. If the remaining horses' conditions deteriorate, they will take them all. The case will stay open.
It is midnight and has been a long day.

UPDATE ~ 10:49 AM, May 12, 2010
We think we have two adopted. The vet comes today and we will go from there.
One poor old girl is so thin she is a grade 1, but she still talks to me
when I go in her stall, bright eyed and hopeful. What a darling mare she is. Normally when
they get this bad they zone out, they are wooden puppets, they will move where you
put them, and are completely shut down and unreactive. This darling old girl is
begging for life. I am saying little prayers for her today...the vet will know.

UPDATE ~ 8:07 PM, May 13, 2010
The vet came and checked the horses over.
The lovely old mare has no teeth left and cannot eat; the gelding has a bone broken in
the knee and he cannot bend it for the farrier: the black mare is blind on one side and
her spine is deformed from who knows what. We have to euthanize all three.

UPDATE ~ 12:31 PM, May 13, 2010
T
he old gal and her friends have a reprieve for the summer!
We just received an offer of a 5-acre field full of lush wild grasses. We will give these
poor guys a good summer, then quietly euthanize them come winter.
At least they can have that.

4/10/10 Oregon:  Horses seized, owner charged

AMH ID Number:  OR3
March 13, 2010
Lot: Paint Pony

This pony's former owner gave him away to someone who didn't care enough or
know enough to provide proper care. Our farrier worked on him for over four
hours today, finding a huge abscess in a front foot. Pony's foot has been soaked
and wrapped for the night; the farrier will be back tomorrow to do more.
We all are praying there is no rotation of the coffin bone.
