6/23/10 Texas:
Judge awards neglected horses to SPCA: Officials have dealt
with owner over 26 horses on 10 acres for several years. Owner noted
horse market down. Ordered to pay $7,470 in expenses. In Texas, it is a
criminal offense to abandon a horse, can
cause major accidents, injuring or killing people as well as horses. Two
horses killed or seriously injured recently on area roadways.

Fair Oaks Ranch Police Department: Local vet informed animal
control officer that one of two emaciated horses under monitoring had
died. Remaining horse had gained 13 pounds over the month of prescribed
feeding and treatment. |

Liberty County horses awarded to Houston SPCA: To save
horse, it must undergo surgery, estimated to cost $2,500, and repairs to
feet, with farrier bills estimated at $8,000 a year.

Officials seize starving horses: Oil field pumper reported
starving animals among 15 horses on a 50-acre tract. Owner arrested on
cruelty to livestock. horses. Confiscated horses being housed at county

8/15/09 Texas:
76 horses found starved: Dozens of
horses in barren pastures; 17 others in barn. Sheriff’s deputies
seized animals and detained ranch owner, who said he could not afford
feed. Sheriff will pay contractors to care for some
animals and humane association will take others.

7/28/09 Texas:
Eighteen horses turned over to rescue agency: Rescue awarded
18 malnourished horses. Second time since May they have aided Hopkins
County Sheriff’s Office in rescuing neglected horses and were awarded
custody of the animals. All suffering malnourishment: two have muscle
problems due to starvation; others with infections and bites caused by
stallions in group. Rescue caring for more than 100 horses; cannot
continue to help law enforcement with such cases without public help in
form of foster and adoptive homes. (photo) |

Dozens of horses, dogs rescued from property in Tyler County:
Investigators seized nearly 30 horses, 20 dogs and 2 birds. Sheriff said
woman called and asked for help to arrange auction because she couldn't
care for them. She never followed up. (photos) |

Heat and economy taking their toll on animals:
Many problems are result of overstocking: having more animals than the
land can support. A way to alleviate the problem is to focus on land
management. Currently “good land managers” are not being hit as hard as
people keeping large animals as pets, who can become blinded by emotion.
The horse becomes a part of the family; they won’t sell it even though
