9/1/10 Illinois:  Fundraiser to benefit Dreams Horse Rescue:  Goal in excess of $50,000. A portion of yearly costs funded through adoption fees, mini-fund raisers, yearly memberships and horse sponsorships, however most of expenses are left unaccounted for. At a cost of $350/horse/mo, need over $30,000 to maintain horses currently at rescue.
9/1/10 Idaho:  BLM captures Saylor Creek wild horses:  Emergency roundup of 200 head brought about by fire that burned most of the herd management area. Herd will be transported to and held in Boise until they can return.
 
8/31/10 Florida:  St. Petersburg man faces animal cruelty charges after deputies say he neglected his miniature horses:  Did not have money to care for pair, gave them to woman  who didn't know what to do with horses.  (photo)
8/31/10 South Carolina:  Woman in neglect case to keep giving lessons:  Facing six misdemeanor counts of ill-treating animals, woman will continue to teach riding classes to college students.
8/30/10 TheHorse.com:  Unwanted Horse Coalition announces Operation Gelding: Coalition will provide funds and materials to assist organizations, associations, and event organizers that wish to sponsor clinics where horse owners can bring stallions to be castrated. Made possible by a special gift from American Association of Equine Practitioners Foundation (AAEP) and UHC; both have donated seed money to get program started.
8/29/10 Washington D.C.:  BLM seeks independent review of wild horse program Bureau of Land Management asking for independent review of wild horse and burro program by  National Academy of Sciences.
8/28/10 Texas:  Denton County woman gets 2 years' probation for neglecting horses, dogs on vacant property: Abandoned a dozen horses and five dogs.
8/28/10 Illinois:  Horse owner may seek venue change over misstatement:  Attorney for  woman accused of neglecting a horse said he may ask judge to move case because of erroneous pretrial publicity linking client to another animal abuse case.
8/27/10 South Dakota:  Hughes Co. sheriff seizes four horses:  State veterinarian's office made decision horses needed to be impounded because of neglect. They were severely malnourished. Sheriff’s department feeding and caring for them.
8/27/10 New Jersey: Sussex adoption offers opportunity to give mustangs a home off the range:  BLM offering wild horse adoption day. Such adoptions down 20 percent in tough economic times.
8/27/10 South Carolina:  Owner of malnourished Johns Island horses to be charged:  Will be charged with ill treatment to animals. Deputies say they were not getting enough food and water.  (photo)
8/27/10 Virginia:  Help sought for 'neglected' horses; animals' owner could face charges: Owner moved out of house a month ago and left 18 horses behind after property underwent foreclosure by lender.
8/26/10 TheHorse.com / California:  California Anti-Slaughter Resolution Passes: SJR 22 calls on federal lawmakers to pass HR 503, the Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act and SB727, its twin senate bill. Both bills prohibit the transport, sale, delivery, or export of horses for slaughter for human consumption. It also criminalizes the purchase, sale, delivery, or export of horsemeat intended for human consumption. Both bills remain pending.
8/26/10 California:  Rescue group seeks help for 160 horses bought at Fallon auction after BLM roundup: Believes they wild mustangs not domestic estrays. $12,000 grant for veterinary care received from ASPCA. Donations still sought for future care.
8/26/10 Indiana:  10-year-old alerts authorities to neglected horses. A Howard County animal control officer calls it one of the worst cases of horse neglect he's seen:  Four malnourished horses removed from farm.   (video)
8/25/10 Michigan:  Man gets probation, jail for animal cruelty Charged with cruelty to after police found two dead horses, eight malnourished, and one injured.
8/25/10 Pennsylvania:  HH's mission - rescue, rehabilitate, foster: Couple has cared for about 600 hoofed animals in 10 years, operating with their own money and from donations. Sluggish economy has been a hardship.
8/25/10 Florida:  Woman charged with starving horse:  Arrested on charges of not giving a horse adequate food for 30 days, causing it to be euthanized.
8/25/10 Missouri:  MU vet wants to stem glut of unwanted horses Castration clinic planned for this fall, donations being raised. One veterinarian says sterilization is a good idea, but larger problem is ban on slaughterhouses.
8/24/10 TheHorse.com / Kansas:  Kansas rescue operator faces cruelty charge: Sheriff's deputies and veterinarians removed 80 horses from equine rescue and retirement facility in July after a tipster complained about their condition.
8/24/10 South Carolina:  Horses on road to recovery. Nonprofit caring for 4 of 6 animals seized from farm:  Rescue director estimates it will take about $1,800 per horse to return them to health. (photo)    (video)
8/23/10 Oklahoma:  Sequoyah County deputies seize 5 horses. Tip leads to malnourished horses:  Officers said there was very little water; absolutely no food.  (photo)
8/23/10 Oklahoma:  Venus, Cupid and other horses that survived an Oklahoma turnpike tractor-trailer accident won't be going to slaughter: Being cared for until adopted. Several require twice daily injections or hydrotherapy or other doctoring. One is a habitual, unprovoked kicker, wouldn't be a good companion. 
8/23/10 Montana:  Animal cruelty charges leveled in horse case:  15 neglected horses seized by sheriff after owner left area without providing a forwarding address. 
8/22/10 Florida:  UF student has hand severed at UF Equine Research Center:  Horse spooked and pulled away from student, who had lead rope wrapped around her wrist, severing her hand from her arm.
8/22/10 Missouri:  Volunteers show what wild horses can do at Flickerwood Arena adoption event:  Of 45 wild horses available on Saturday, 22 adopted.
8/22/10 South Carolina:  Charleston authorities seize six horses at farm:  Six horses described as emaciated taken into emergency protective custody. Conditions for 24 others that remain will be monitored on a daily basis. Local rescue says area has huge unwanted-horse issue.
8/21/10 Kentucky:  Paragallo, Moore banned from registering horses with Jockey Club:  Follows convictions on animal cruelty charges.
8/21/10 New Mexico:  Neighbor’s photos prompt rescue of three starving horsesTwo state livestock officers picked up animals.  (photo)
8/21/10 New Mexico:  Equines in danger:  Marked increase in neglect and abandonment of horses in New Mexico. Uptick appears to be consequence of downturn in the economy; not unusual for horses to be left in forests or wilderness areas.  (photo)
8/19/10 New York:  Horse owner charged with 125th count of animal cruelty; stems from deceased animal:  73 horses seized in March. Accused of having "severely unsanitary and inhumane" conditions on her farm, resulting in death of a horse.   (video)
8/19/10 Florida:  Neglected horses in stable hands:  Woman who took in neglected horses as a favor to owner now caring for them fulltime as owner abandoned them with her. She dreams of creating a backyard facility where special needs children can interact with them, welcomes donations to feed horses; also needs more tack and fencing.
8/19/10 New York:  Area farm provides all-around safe haven:  Facility retrains and provides homes for retired race or work horses, involving children and women going through trauma. Maintains 39 equines. Feed costs have risen. Soliciting donations difficult, finding volunteers near impossible. Always more horses than can be taken in.
8/18/10 Wyoming:  Public input being accepted on horse birth control planBLM updating fertility control program for wild horses on the Pryor Mountain Wild Horse Range.
August 2010 Kansas:  80 Horses seized from NE KS equine rescue farm:  Tragedy came from not being able to say no, getting caught up in "the save" and not having a way to pay the bills.    (video)

8/15/10 California:  BLM moves forward with state's largest mustang roundup this year:  Federal officials have begun a six-week operation to gather horses from one of the state's biggest mustang herds, a roundup that's expected to be California's largest this year and the second largest in the nation.    (photo)
8/14/10 Illinois:  Horse neglect cases rising:  Williamson County Sheriff's Department has seized 15 horses in the last year and a half. It's cost between $20,000 and $30,000 taxpayer dollars to care for the animals.   (photo)
8/13/10 North Carolina:  Symposium to explore possible increase in horse abandonments in N-C:  Horse market is way down and sales in some cases might be closed or not accepting horses because there's no place for these horses to go.     (audio)
8/13/10 Ohio:  Horse neglect cases rising:  Owners running out of cash in struggling economy, making it hard to care for horses. Appalachian Ohio SPCA official: "People are dumping horses on backroads. Others are simply abandoning them, either leaving them behind when they move or dumping them on someone else's property entirely."     (video)
8/13/10 Idaho:  Picabo horse auction a gem of the Old West:  Three years ago, horse-sale industry collapsed. Market for selling horses has disappeared.
8/11/10 Maine:  Owners of horse farm face charges. Husband and wife will appear in court for seven counts of animal cruelty: Man arrested, wife charged after state animal welfare agents seized 15 horses and other animals from the farm they watched.
8/11/10 Indiana:  Arrests made in horse & pony neglect. Mullinses each charged with Class D Felony:  Animals left with only rain water to drink and no food. Being cared for at two rescues; will be at least a week before they can say if the animals will survive.  
8/11/10 Indiana:  Owners of neglected horses now facing animal neglect charges:  Charges stem from removal of 13 horses and ponies on August 4th. Couple previously convicted with neglect and abandonment of an animal.   (video)
8/10/10 Michigan:  Given a second chance. Sixteen U.P. horses have been given a second chance, thanks to a group of volunteers:  Most of the horses that were adopted were returned to the rescue because they were not manageable.    
8/10/10 California:  Court clears way for horse roundup on CA-NV border:  Federal appeals court rejected critics' claims that free-roaming mustangs have a legal right to remain on range. Lawyers for Obama administration agrued that leaving overpopulated herds on public rangeland would do animals more harm than good.
8/8/10 Connecticut: Bethany farm saves animals from slaughter:  Pays by the pound to rescue horses from kill pen.   (video)  (photos)
8/8/10 Alabama:  Unwanted horses an emotional issue Feral stallion running loose for weeks tore down fence surrounding herd of mares. Montgomery rescue has 20 acres; can accommodate about 30 horses. It turns away between 100 to 150 horses a year, saving space for criminal abuse cases. Not a huge demand for rescue horses.  (photo)
8/7/10 Wyoming:  Wild-horse plan to get longer comment period:  Federal officials have extended public comment period on national strategy aimed at reducing wild-horse roundups across the West. BLM will accept public comments through Sept. 3 on a draft strategy document.
8/6/10 Indiana:  Neglected horses need your help: Rescue wasn’t expecting to care for eight of 13 horses removed by county officials; asking for monetary donations, food and volunteers.    (video)
8/6/10 Virginia:  10 Emaciated horses on the mend:  Owner surrendered horses and a goat to Charles City Animal Control. They're now in permanent custody of United States Equine Rescue League. Recovery could take up to a year if they survive initial stage of rehabilitation.    (video)  (photos)
8/6/10 Washington:  After getting court order, Kitsap Health District removes dead horseOwner arrest on suspicion of first-degree animal cruelty after sheriff’s deputies found dead horse, two other malnourished horses, and four emaciated dogs. Neighbors complained about the stench.
8/6/10 Nevada:  Horse advocates ask court to halt mustang roundup: After a federal judge refused to issue a temporary injunction, lawyers ask 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for an emergency order to block the government's biggest roundup of the year planned next week in California and Nevada.

8/5/10 Georgia:  Horses in recovery? Murray County Animal Control, state Ag Dept. involved:  Woman spent spent $1,700 in two weeks caring for emaciated horse she bought from man under investigation by county and state.  (photos)
8/5/10 South Carolina:  Deputies seize two horses in Mount Pleasant:  Neighbors concerned because animals were tied to concrete blocks in a field behind a home, in the sun with no food or water.
8/5/10 Indiana: 13 neglected ponies, horses rescued:  On a scale of zero to five being the healthiest, the horses were a one. It took officials hours to wrangle the animals; they were forced to tranquilize several to move them.   (video)

8/3/10 Georgia:  Neglected horses recovering in new home:  Three horses rescued from a farm two weeks ago adjusting to new home. One euthanized. Animal control officer said they're seeing more horses neglected, even abandoned(video)
8/3/10 Florida:  Death Sentence is reversed for two neglected wild mustangs:  
Sixteen Hands Horse Sanctuary giving temporary shelter to two mustangs taken in from an area Animal Control facility. The horses were to be euthanized because they were not adoptable. Rescue currently houses over 30 unwanted, neglected, and abandoned horses.
8/3/10 California:  Animal Control tracking suspect that abandoned horse in Nuevo:  Witnesses saw suspect drop the horse off. Animal control has seen an uptick in equine-oriented troubles since the economy soured.
8/2/10 California:  SPCA hopes tips will lead them to missing horses:  Reward offered for information on whereabouts of 17 dehydrated horses.
8/2/10 Maryland:  Baltimore County lawyer, wife get jail time for horse neglect:  Judge sentenced Hilton Silver to 60 days in jail and Donna Silver to 30 days; ordered them to pay the county more than $16,000 in restitution for care of two other horses animal control removed from their home in March 2009.
8/1/10 Washington:  Dead horse leads to arrest of 60-year-old South Kitsap woman:  Stench of decaying carcass of one horse led to discovering of others that were emaciated and neglected. One had to be sedated to treat its hooves.
8/1/10 Arizona:  Tucson Giving: Happy Equine Acres Rescue & Therapy (HEART) of Tucson. Group's focus is helping horses, teaching humane careMore than 30 volunteers attend to animals. Donations help cover $3,000-plus monthly expenses (excluding veterinary bills) of caring for rescued horses.
8/1/10 North Carolina:  Grad. project chronicles efforts to rehabilitate a neglected horseFound in a pen that was also serving as a disposal site for dirty diapers, mare and colt taken into custody by Animal Services. Due to lack of food, animals were eating dirty diapers.    (photos)
