12/16/09 Washington:  'Feed bank' opens for struggling horse owners: Horse Harbor Foundation estimates 200 to 300 horses in Kitsap County need care, at risk of malnutrition or starvation. People forced to give horses away or have them seized. Continuing recession forcing many horse owners to choose between feeding animals and feeding families.  Kitsap Humane Society is opening feed bank for low-income horse owners; is also looking for donations of hay.   (video)
12/16/09 Kansas:  Topekan called to help out a horse rescue in Tennessee:  With Capital Area Animal Response Team and United Animal Nations, called to Tennessee where 20 horses found dead on a farm; 84 near death. She also runs pet food pantry that gives away free food to pet owners who can't afford it.    (video)
12/16/09 Pennsylvania:  Emaciated horses found in W. Philadelphia:  SPCA caring for four emaciated horses. Investigators called makeshift, unlicensed shelter an "animal cruelty scandal."  Owner moved onto abandoned lot with horses early last summer. By late summer he vanished, abandoning horses.   (video)

12/7/09 Florida:  Martin County foundation sees spike in need to help horses: Barn full with 13 horses; not nearly large enough to accommodate number of horses abandoned during recession. 12/4/09 Utah:  Homes needed for abused, abandoned horses:  Utah Animal Adoption Center has 20 horses. Utah seeing its share of recession animals, some abandoned in desert. Shelter  works with horses to make them more social. They are often afraid of humans or have had no formal training. Shelter not the place to get a perfect horse.  (video)  
12/4/09 Florida:  56 Abandoned horses in need of home:  56 horses turned over to adoption agency over Thanksgiving weekend. Non-profit Horse Protection Association, Marion County, has custody of animals and desperately needs food for them and foster families. A few years ago, the thoroughbreds could sell for thousands or even tens of thousands of dollars each. Now they'll be lucky if they can give them away.   (video)

Health Dept. says horses were living in terrible conditions:  Health officials confiscated horses from street vendors who sell produce from horse-drawn carts. 11/9/09 Wisconsin:  Struggling to bring hope to abandoned horses:  Rescues running out of room. This time of year "dumping season." Janestown rescue took down sign because horses were being left without permission. Last year the rescue had 27 horses, now they have 60. Last year it cost around $300,000 to run facility.
